Making St Thomas’s fit to face the future

Improving St Thomas's

Improving our building for worship and community use

Different generations have always adapted the church to better meet their needs. Our plans aim to improve the comfort of any who visit, maintain capacity, ensure flexibility for worship, concerts or other events, and preserve the highest standards in materials and design. In particular, we will replace our unwieldy and uncomfortable pews with benches and chairs that meet all our aims, and plan to install a nave altar table that makes a more fitting focus for Eucharistic worship.

Building repairsImplementing essential repairs to keep the building stable, watertight and safe

If we do not act quickly parts of our wonderful old Church will literally fall to the ground. We need to repair old, crumbling and porous stonework, make good and watertight our roof and ensure our electrical and floor ar eas meet essential safety standards. This work never ends, but we hope to make good our structure for generations to come.

Historical legacy

Restoring and safeguarding our historical legacy

St Thomas’s Church is a remarkable medieval structure containing many interesting features from six centuries of our history. The famous doom painting has been described by Simon Jenkins in ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’ as the most complete in England. Visitors from all over the world are welcomed to the church and are not disappointed by what they find.

Centuries of grime cover most surfaces and stonework. Removing this will allow St Thomas’s to shine in its former glory and to take its place as one of the true glories of English ecclesiastical architecture. In particular we have plans for the wonderful coffered wood ceilings and angels, the true colours of which we believe lie hidden.
