Benefits of Joining a Choir
Firstly it is extremely satisfying to sing such fantastic music to a high standard to enrich the services for so many people and also to get inner fulfilment and at the same time enjoy yourself and have fun. In the case of boys and girls, and to some extent adults, there is some financial reward and other perks.
The educational benefits are many. There is a training programme called ‘Voice For Life’ which develops the voice, the musical knowledge and understanding of the services and the Church’s year. These awards culminate with the Bishop’s Awards where the medal is presented in the Cathedral. Above all, singing helps to develop self confidence and is also a very healthy hobby, as it encourages good breathing and posture.
The social benefits are quite extensive such as learning to work and function as a team and to get along with a range of people both younger and older.
Social Events
There are a number of social events throughout the year where members of the choir, their partners and parents are invited to attend. There is the annual Games Evening and trips which include a summer outing to sing at New College, Oxford and a trip to the sea side at Swanage. The social events are often combined with fund raising such as the Annual Quiz Evening, coffee mornings in church and ‘Music While You Munch’ which is a series of lunch-time concerts held in St Thomas’s.
