Description

The Sarum Consort will be performing works by William Byrd and other 16th century composers at St Thomas's on Saturday 14th October starting at 7:30pm. The programme:

William Byrd Mass for Three Voices
Thomas Tallis Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter
Giovanni Paolo Cima O Sacrum Convivium

William Byrd was England's foremost Catholic composer at a time when adherence to the Catholic faith was becoming increasingly dangerous. Most of Byrd's music composed after 1590 was written for the clandestine Catholic church, where secretive services would be held in the private chapels of powerful Recusant Catholic nobles, such as those of the Arundells of Wardour and the Webbes of Odstock.

This intimate performance, reflecting the dangerous reality of Catholic music in Elizabethan England, presents consort songs and motets by Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Heinrich Schütz and Giovanni Paolo Cima, interweaved amongst movements of Byrd's beautiful miniature Mass for Three Voices.
