Saturday 16 November 2019

Coffee Morning and stalls (Art, Cards, Preserves, Flowers, Gifts) 9.30am to 12 noon

Lunchtime concert - 12.15 to 1pm - Celebrating Benjamin Banks

During the morning of 16th November there will be a gathering at St Thomas’s of Banks instruments and their current custodians. Thanks to the journals of his contemporary John Marsh, details survive of some of the popular chamber pieces of the day, including items by JC Bach, Giardini, Abel, Corelli and Marsh himself, copies likely sold through Banks’ shop. These were played at enthusiastic informal social gatherings at Banks’ and other musical households in the town, and it is proposed that some of this music will be played (with equal enthusiasm and informality) as part of the Lunchtime Recital series to help raise funds for the restoration of the church which meant so much to Mr Banks. It should be noted that the players will be meeting for the first time, and repertoire is dependent on who turns up!  Please join us at 12.15 where we will gather, along with an 18th century Salisbury music historian and a local violin maker, and experience a unique chance to see, hear and learn more about the life and legacy of Benjamin Banks.

Entry is free, with a retiring collection in aid of the Quest 2020 fundraising appeal
