Baptisms & Confirmation

A baptism is a joyful occasion as we give thanks to God for the gift of a child. If the baptism is for an adult, we give thanks for their calling as a Christian.

In baptism, the new Christian is cleansed by water, so becoming one with Jesus Christ who was baptised in the River Jordan, whose saving power we believe in and whose example we try to live by.

The new Christian, in baptism, becomes part of Christ's body here on earth, the Church, and is united with all Christians throughout the world.

What to do next

St Thomas's offers baptism for all who wish it for themselves or for their children. Please contact the Parish Office for further details for available dates and a booking form. The Parish Office will contact a member of the clergy team for you, who will arrange to meet with you to discuss baptism and what it means to be baptised. They will also lead you through what to expect in the service and will answer any questions you have.

If you live outside of the parish of St Thomas's, your own parish church will be pleased to offer baptism. If you're not sure about this, or have a particular reason for preferring St Thomas's, the clergy team will be happy to discuss this with you.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a service where a person declares their Christian faith publicly. If you were baptised as an infant and wish to affirm your commitment to the baptismal promises made on your behalf, then it is time to be confirmed. There is no specific lower age limit for this, but you should be of an age to make the decision for yourself. Confirmation is always performed by the Bishop, and you will probably be invited to go to a service at Salisbury Cathedral, the Bishop's church, for your confirmation service. For further information contact one of the clergy who will be happy to discuss confirmation with you.
